PLANTAGENET ENAMEL - CARRÉ PLANTAGENET MUSEUM

General description

The Plantagenet enamel is the largest copper plate champlevée ever made known and the Western Middle Ages. The enamel is Geoffrey V the Fair, Count of Anjou and Maine, Duke of Normandy , founder of the Plantagenet dynasty. He married , in the Le Mans Cathedral , Matilda , daughter of the King of England. His son Henry II , born in Le Mans , in the Palace of the Counts of Maine, became King of England in 1154. Geoffroy died in 1157. He was buried in the cathedral. He is represented with a shield, a sword and a luxurious civilian clothes : a blue and white coat, a green tunic , the bliaud , pointed shoes and a hat . It is a champleve enamel : cavities are dug on a thick metal plate of 8mm. These small cells , created by pushing the metal , then receive the metal powder before being heated.
