General description

Near the Cité Plantagenêt, collection of Italian, Flemish, Dutch and French paintings from the 15th to the 19th centuries and furniture, sculptures and ornaments. Egyptian gallery.The museum of Tessé stands in the grounds of the former estate of the Tessé family, whose collections formed the basis for the original museum. Permanent exhibitions span two floors, with paintings, sculptures and ornaments from the 12th to the 19th and 20th century. The key pieces are Le sommeil d’Elie and La vanité, by Philippe de Champaigne, La nature morte aux armures de Willem Van Aelst, Louis XV’s desk and Scarron’s original paintings of the Roman comique. In 2001, a vast basement area was opened to house a display on Pharaonic Egypt. Life-size reproductions of the tombs of Queen Nofretari, wife of Ramses II and Sennefer, mayor of Thebes can be seen here.
