EPAU ABBEY

General description

Founded in 1229 by Berengaria of Navarre, Richard I, the Lionheart’s widow, the abbey is one of the most beautiful Cistercian gems in France. It was acquired by the Sarthe local council in 1959. Isolated in France when the Plantagenet dynasty floundered, Berengaria of Navarre was “like a shipwreck, buffeted by winds and waves” and eventually found a haven of peace in Le Mans in 1204. It is said that Berengaria found “shelter but not happiness” in Le Mans. She founded the abbey of the Mercy of God at L’Epau. In 1959, thanks to public funding, the abbey regained its former splendour and has since become a cultural attraction in Sarthe. The abbey and its outbuildings are set in walled grounds on the outskirts of the town.
