HOTEL-DIEU COEFFORT

General description

Gothic-style, former hospital. The Hôtel-Dieu de Coeffort was built in the 12th century by order of Henry II, King of England, to shelter the poor, the sick, orphans and pilgrims. Although the outside is rather staid, the inside is a particularly fine piece of work. There are some beautiful paintings to be seen. The church is open during services and for guided tours. It is worth a visit. The “treasure of Coeffort” comprising 31 pieces of medieval silver was found in 1953 during renovation work. The silverware was used by the hospital in the 14th and 15th centuries and was probably hidden away from the English invaders. The treasure is now displayed in the Carré Plantagenêt, the museum of archaeology.
